CES 2015: New Digital Cameras

As usual, several digital camera manufacturers chose the recent CES 2015 show in Las Vegas to make announcements about new digital cameras that will be available for purchase in the upcoming year. And as has been typical in the past few years, the overall volume of cameras announced at CES dropped again, especially in the area of point-and-shoot models.

You can expect more announcements to occur in the upcoming weeks, but it's likely that most of the announcements will involve advanced interchangeable lens cameras as well as advanced fixed lens cameras. Point and shoot cameras continue to be overtaken by cell phone cameras.
The 2015 CES digital camera announcements, sorted by camera manufacturer, include the following. (All prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices.)

Canon

Canon announced five models for the PowerShot family during CES 2015, including:
  • ELPH 160 IS. This model ($119.99) has a 20MP image sensor and an 8X optical zoom lens.
  • ELPH 170 IS. You'll find a 12X optical zoom lens and 20MP of resolution with the ELPH 170 IS ($149.99).
  • SX530 HS. The SX530 HS ($429.99) offers a powerful 50X optical zoom lens.
  • SX610 HS. This thin model includes an 18X optical zoom lens with 20.2 megapixels of resolution for an MSRP of $249.99.
  • SX710 HS. Canon's PowerShot SX710 HS ($349.99) is an interesting looking model with a 30X optical zoom lens and 20.3MP of resolution.
Look for these models to be available for sale beginning in February.

Nikon

The highlight for Nikon from CES 2015 was the unveiling of its DX-format D5500 DSLR ($899.95 for the body only, available in February). The D5500 has 24.2MP of resolution. It also includes a touch screen LCD that can swivel away from the camera body.

Sony

Sony's primary announcement at CES 2015 centered on two additions to its Action Cam brand family, the X100V and the HDR-AS200V. The X100V ($500 with a waterproof case) is capable of recording Ultra HD video and includes a 12.8-megapixel image sensor, while the AS200V ($300 with a waterproof case) is a very similar camera, other than the Ultra HD recording capability. Both Sony models will be offered for purchase in March.
